Colorful Bougainvillea – Can Juanito üüber die richtige Pflege einer Pflanze mit Haltung.
If you want to transform your wall into a field of color, you can't go past the bougainvillea. This Südamerican climbing plant is not an accessory, it takes over without compromise. Its bright bracts in purple, pink or white are not an addition, but a statement. Whoever plants them is making a clear statement: no decoration is growing here. A character is growing here.
Not a care case – but not self-sufficient either
The bougainvillea is enjoyable as long as you know its rules. Sun is a must. Partial shade? It can, but it only does what is necessary. If you want it to explode – in terms of color, of course –, give it light, warmth and space.
It is watered with care. Their roots like it dry, waterlogging punishes them with a refusal to grow or mold. Once a week in summer is often enough. In winter: every two weeks at most. And please never over the leaves - otherwise uninvited guests such as scale insects will come.
Climbing allowed – but with pruning control
If you leave it alone, the bougainvillea will easily grow ten meters in all directions. If you want to keep its spread under control, you need to prune regularly - but with moderation. Only the shoots, never the trunk. This keeps the plant vital, malleable and vibrant. Incidentally, cuttings are produced that quickly grow into new plants. Propagation that is not only practical, but also stylish.
Pot or soil – both possible, but well thought out
Whether in a pot or in the garden: the location is crucial. Light, air and well-drained soil are the key. In a pot it needs space, no half measures. Repot when the roots start to thicken. In the garden, a layer of mulch helps it to take root, two fertilizers a year give it a boost. Liquid fertilizer in spring, mineral fertilizer in summer - that's all it needs to get going.
Resistance yes – but not a free pass
Wool shields are annoying, but no drama. The plant shows early on when something is wrong: white spots, sticky residue. A damp cloth or a spray of potassium soap solution is often enough. If you check regularly and avoid air congestion, you will rarely have problems.
The bougainvillea is not an ornament for friends of the middle class. It is a statement. Loud, lively and uncompromising. If you understand it, you get a plant that prolongs the summer, makes the garden stand out and adds a touch of South American wildness to any space - without ever drifting into kitsch.
