During the festive season, exotics are among the most popular
Decorative plants in the home. They are therefore not easy to care for.
Who, when and why the (un)custom of transforming exotic flowers from overseas into European Christmas decorations began is unknown. The fact is that poinsettias, amaryllis and holly are among the most popular potted plants in December. Thanks to their large fan base among foreign residents, they are of course also popular on Mallorca. Almost every garden center on the island currently offers these Christmas decoration flowers.
One of the most popular plants, even among locals, is clearly the poinsettia, thanks to its bright red leaves. The poinsettia originates from the tropical deciduous forests of Central America. Its name there: Flower of the Holy Night.Another real star among decorative Christmas flowers is the poinsettia. This tropical plant native to South America is characterized by its tall stem. As bulbous plants, delphiniums are ideal for use in flower arrangements, bouquets and Christmas decorations.
In Northern Europe in particular, holly is a botanical symbol of Christianity. Its prickly leaves symbolize a crown of thorns, the red berries stand for drops of blood. In England, holly branches are hung in front of the door on the evening of the winter solstice as protection against evil spirits. Together with other plants, the branches of holly have a festive effect and are suitable for crafting and decorating.
After all, the Christmas rose, which is also a popular plant decoration at Christmas time, comes from the Alpine region. Its name says it all. It blooms mainly during Advent and, with its white winter petals, is a Christmas symbol of hope.
All these plants, which grow wild by nature, are very difficult to grow as potted flowers. Dry indoor air, artificial light and a few handfuls of potting soil are not the habitat in which they thrive. They can therefore only survive over a longer period of time with the addition of fertilizer, regular fresh air and lots of love. It is best to seek advice from the garden center of your choice before buying.
