Summer heat Mallorca - stay cool in the beds
Summer heatwaves are a real stress test for flowers and plants on Mallorca too. And watering is not always the best solution.
With daytime temperatures of more than 35 degrees Celsius, it's not just people and animals that work up a sweat on Mallorca. The midsummer heatwaves in the coming weeks will also be a physical strain for flowers and plants in the garden. And for this reason, they need special attention.
The biggest problem for both potted and bedding plants is the rapid drying out of the soil. Mulching - i.e. covering the soil around the plants with dry twigs, branches or small stones - can help to counteract evaporation caused by extreme sunlight. Mulching beds and potted plants is not only recommended in midsummer, but also reduces watering requirements all year round. However, scorching heat causes the soil to dry out extremely quickly - and the surface becomes as hard as concrete. As a result, the soil cannot absorb water. For this reason, beds and potting soil should be carefully loosened with a small hoe at regular intervals in midsummer. Many hobby gardeners tend to shower their flowers and plants frequently and abundantly in midsummer to prevent them from drying out. Not a bad idea in principle, as long as certain rules are followed. The best time to water is in the early morning or late evening to prevent leaves and flowers from being damaged by the "laser effect" of the water beads poured over them.
On particularly hot days, weeds also like to sprout - and should therefore always be removed as quickly as possible. Exotic flowers and plants also need an extra portion of nutrients in the form of fertilizer during the hot season. The best place to ask is your garden center in Mallorca.
