Garden care in Mallorca - How to banish pests

Mediterranean aromatic plants and herbs such as lavender, thyme or

Rosemary helps to keep ants, aphids and snails away from the beds.

Aphids, caterpillars, snails or ants tend to be among the most unpopular pests in flower beds for amateur gardeners. But before you start using chemicals to combat pests and parasites, you should first resort to natural repellents.
Mallorca, just like all other Mediterranean regions, is rich in herbs and aromatic plants whose aromas keep many pests out of the garden. These include, for example, rosemary, sage, thyme, lavender and basil. Their fragrance is particularly strong when they grow in a sunny location and their flavor also develops more intensely there. Lavender, thyme and sage use their scent to repel pests such as aphids and ants from the bed.

Sage also repels cabbages, caterpillars, slugs and snails as well as aphids from the garden and patio. Snails in particular do not like the bitter aroma of this herb. This is due to the thujone it contains and its menthol-like smell, which does not appeal to slugs and snails.

Basil not only tastes wonderful in salads and pasta, but also keeps flies out of the kitchen. A small plant on the table is also said to help against annoying wasps. And some people swear that the plant helps against mosquitoes.

Mint is avoided by ants in particular and, thanks to its intense aroma, also protects all adjacent plants. Mice and rats keep away at all. However, mint should only be planted in pots, otherwise it can overgrow the entire garden.
