A Mallorcan garden without a palm tree - even in the planter? Hard to imagine. Palm trees are a piece of the island, they create atmosphere and provide Mediterranean greenery. Although palm trees are considered robust, they need to be cared for properly.
A palm tree in the garden is not just a simple eye-catcher, but also a symbol of the exotic flair and charm that Mallorca radiates. It emphasizes the subtropical climate of the island and creates a picturesque backdrop that could hardly be more idyllic. But a palm tree is not just a decorative element, it is a living being that requires careful care and attention. Even the most robust palm species can suffer without the right care. From choosing the right location, to adapting to the climate and soil, to controlling diseases and pests, there are many aspects to consider to ensure the palm stays healthy and thrives. Therefore, while we enjoy the beauty and atmosphere that a palm tree provides in our garden in Mallorca, it is important that we respect and care for its needs. Our experts have some tips for you:
Among the many types of palm trees that exist and can be planted at home depending on the space available are the Canary Island palm, the Alejandra palm, the Washington palm and the date palm.
If you want to buy or transplant a palm tree, summer between May and September is the best time to do so, as it is a subtropical plant that needs warmth and sun.
The Palma is a beautiful way to add a tropical touch to your garden, and at the same time its low water requirement is an advantage at this time of year when there is little rainfall. In summer, it is recommended to water them 1-2 times a week and in winter every 15 days if it does not rain.
Transplanting a palm tree is relatively easy, although they can be planted in all types of soil and substrates. The better the quality of the substrate, the better the palm can anchor itself in the soil and improve nutrient uptake. Rooting products can also be used here.
Once the palm tree is in the desired location, it should be fertilized, either with a conventional or organic fertilizer, whereby we recommend a long-term fertilizer, as we do not want to damage the roots and growth with quick fertilizers.
