Just let it go - the right houseplant for Mallorca
Hanging plants often add the finishing touch to a patio or balcony area. They can also hide
the one or other unpleasant view and fill empty spaces without charm with great content.
To help you make the right choice on Mallorca, we asked our garden experts at Can Juanito for the best plants for local conditions:
We would like to introduce the queen of all plants first. It is the TILLANDSIA family, or, as it is called here, the air carnations. There are many different varieties and you can freely choose which one you like best.
Tillandsias are epiphytic plants, i.e. plants that live on another specimen (usually on trees). For this reason, they do not need a substrate to survive. You can hang them wherever you want with a jute rope or similar. It is important to sprinkle them with water from time to time (it is better if it is rain or osmosis water to avoid unsightly limescale stains).
We recommend hanging the plants from time to time in summer and immersing them in a bowl of water for a few hours.
Another hanging plant that is very suitable for shady verandas is the HELECHOS (ferns). Here you should pay attention to watering, but do not water them excessively.
TRADESCANTIAS are also part of the Mallorcan terraced landscape. They adapt very well to the local climate, although they can lose their leaves in winter, which then grow back in spring. With mild winters or good adaptation, they remain as perennial plants. There are different types of Tradescantias; the three that we usually see in Mallorca are easy to care for and are happy. They need little water, only if they are directly exposed to the sun, more attention is required. If they are in a suitable location, they will sprout and form beautiful small purple to pink flowers. They are usually very fast-growing, so you can be sure that the plant will be in full bloom within a few months of planting.
Finally, we would like to recommend SENECIO ROWLEYANUS, a hanging succulent whose shape makes it one of the most elegant plants. It requires very little water and is easy to care for. It adapts best to somewhat shadier locations, but also remains beautiful and elegant like no other in the sun if care is taken to ensure that it does not dry out too much.
