Rain and moisture can also be a problem for patio furniture in Mallorca during the cold season.
Weatherproof covers provide a remedy.
While garden and patio furniture in Germany has largely been mothballed to protect it from autumn storms and winter frost, outdoor furniture on Mallorca usually remains outside. There are sunny days to sit outside on the island almost all year round.
Nevertheless, even in the Mediterranean region, rain and humidity can take their toll on outdoor furnishings, some of which are extremely expensive. So if you don't want to store your garden furniture in the garage until next spring, it's a good idea to protect it from possible weather damage with special covers.
Suitable protective covers or sleeves for outdoor furniture can be found in tree markets and garden centers on the island. Their sizes vary depending on the type of furniture, such as tables, chairs, sofas or lounge groups. Unlike normal plastic tarpaulins, they do not require ropes for fastening, but sit firmly over the furniture once they have been pulled over with the help of elastic bands attached to the lower edges.
Protective covers should be breathable
To ensure that the garden furniture does not suffer from mildew or mold, you should always use high-quality protective covers made of breathable PVC.
They are a few euros more expensive than more simple covers, but prevent condensation from forming underneath them or moisture from condensing on the inside of the protective cover.
Garden furniture made of natural wood such as teak or oak should be painted with appropriate wood preservatives from DIY stores or local hardware stores (ferreterias) before being left outside in winter. These are usually based on linseed oil, which closes the pores of the wood and thus prevents water and moisture from penetrating.
