Photovoltaics and energy storage on Mallorca: the path to energy independence

How solar energy and modern storage solutions enable a self-sufficient life on the island

Mallorca, known for its more than 300 days of sunshine a year, offers ideal conditions for the use of solar energy. The combination of photovoltaic systems and energy storage systems enables homeowners to largely cover their own energy requirements and become independent of external electricity suppliers.

Sunny prospects: Photovoltaics on Mallorca

The geographical location of Mallorca ensures a high level of sunshine, which makes the use of photovoltaic systems particularly efficient. A system with an output of 1 kilowatt peak (kWp) can generate around 1,510 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity here every year, which is around 50% more than in southern Germany.

Advantages of solar energy on Mallorca

Cost savings: By producing your own electricity, you can significantly reduce your monthly energy costs
Environmental protection: Solar energy is clean and renewable, which reduces the carbon footprint.
Increase in property value: A modern photovoltaic system increases the market value and attractiveness of the house.

Energy storage: the key to self-sufficiency

While photovoltaic systems produce electricity during the day, energy demand often increases in the evening. This is where battery storage systems come into play. They store excess solar power and make it available when needed, maximizing self-consumption and minimizing dependence on the grid.

Current developments in battery storage:

Cost reduction: In recent years, the prices for battery storage systems have fallen continuously, making them more economical to purchase.
Technological progress: Modern storage systems are characterized by higher capacities and longer lifetimes, which makes the investment even more attractive.

Autarky in Mallorca: How independent can you be? Complete energy independence depends on various factors, including the size of the photovoltaic system, the capacity of the storage system and individual energy consumption. With an optimally dimensioned system and a suitable storage system, it is possible to achieve a degree of self-sufficiency of up to 80%.

Example calculation:
▶ System size: 5 kWp photovoltaic
▶ Annual electricity production: approx. 7,550 kWh
▶ Average household consumption: 4,000 kWh
▶ Energy storage: 10 kWh capacity
With this configuration, a large part of the annual electricity requirement can be covered by the company's own production, with the storage system ensuring that sufficient energy is available even during hours with little sunlight.

Funding and financial incentives
The Balearic government supports the installation of photovoltaic systems through various funding programs. In 2025, homeowners can receive subsidies of up to 600 euros per installed kilowatt peak and up to 400 euros per installed kilowatt hour of battery storage capacity. These subsidies are intended to further promote the expansion of renewable energies on the island.

A step in the right direction
The combination of photovoltaics and energy storage on Mallorca offers an excellent opportunity to cover the majority of your own energy needs. In addition to financial savings, you actively contribute to environmental protection and gain independence from external energy suppliers.

In view of the available subsidies and constant technological developments, now is the ideal time to invest in a sustainable energy future on the sunshine island.
