There are numerous heating systems to choose from in Mallorca. Which one you ultimately decide on depends on various factors.
Even if the winter on Mallorca is milder than in Germany, heating is unavoidable on the sunny island. In addition to cozy warmth, the annoying problem of mold, which is all too familiar to many, arises in the cold season. What options are there for keeping your own four walls pleasantly warm? And what do you need to look out for so that your money doesn't literally go up in smoke?
Insulation
Due to the high humidity, especially in the coastal regions, and the often poor insulation, mold infestation is a major problem on the island. And since "I'll wipe that off with Lejia" is not really effective, you should take a look at the insulation before using any form of heating. Because if windows and doors are better sealed, this not only reduces heat loss, but also the risk of the familiar black spots.
The requirements
There are often three things at once that play a role in heating. Firstly, of course, money. The focus is not only on the purchase price, but also on the subsequent consumption costs (which of course depend heavily on the insulation). The second aspect is also relevant here: Efficiency. How good is the heating system really? Does it provide constant, pleasant warmth or is it just "hot air" in the figurative sense? And last but not least, the installation effort should of course be as low as possible.
Central heating – The classic
Central oil or gas heating systems are generally used in new builds in Mallorca. Of course, the oil prices fluctuate. In the current season, if you buy 500 liters of heating oil, you can expect to pay a good 60 cents per liter net; however, the price per liter can be reduced for larger quantities. However, as it is a fossil fuel, the price trend is generally upwards rather than downwards. Extensive construction work and a deep dip into the wallet are required for a sustainable installation.
Fireplaces, stoves, fireplace cassettes
The fireplace. Present in many homes, especially those built in older years, they serve no decorative purpose but were and are used as a source of heat. However, there is often a catch - due to the simple design of the flue, a lot of cold air enters the room from above as soon as the fireplace is not lit. Here, a closed flue should be added or - when not in use - a guard should be placed in front of it. Another disadvantage: fireplaces are often only found in the main rooms, i.e. in the living room and kitchen. But if you don't want to stand in the bathroom in the morning with rattling taps, there's no getting around a supplementary heating system.
The need for a dry place to store the fuel must also be taken into account. Here you have the choice between wood (pine and olive) and pellets in small or large versions. The pellets are often sold in 15 kilogram bags and cost between three and six euros. Wood is slightly more expensive at six to ten euros per 15 kilos, but is also more efficient at generating heat.
Infrared heaters

Unlike conventional heating systems such as oil heaters or fireplaces, infrared heating does not primarily heat the air, but emits heat directly to walls, ceilings and floors. Since the room temperature is warmer as a result, the actual room temperature can be kept around three degrees lower," explains Edgar Habermehl from Heat4All. This can save up to 20 percent energy - which is also noticeable in your wallet. Another plus point: moisture is automatically drawn out of the walls. This means that infrared heating can demonstrably prevent the dreaded formation of mold. Infrared heaters are also a real eye-catcher. They can be presented as a mirror or picture and can be optimally integrated into the room situation.
