It's not uncommon here in Mallorca: Mold infestation and moisture in the property – but what to do if the mold is already there ?
At first glance, a small mould infestation does not look dangerous if there is moisture damage in the house or apartment. Nevertheless, many people underestimate the health risk. Especially if they try to remove the mold themselves. Although this often leads to superficial success, in most cases the mold has already penetrated deep into the building materials or fixtures and fittings and continues to pose a health risk.
Work clothing and preventive measures also apply in MallorcaTo protect yourself from the spores that spread when removing mould, you need special work clothing. This includes a protective suit, breathing mask, face protection, gloves and overshoes. If you want to use a disposable suit for mold removal, make sure that it has the CE Category III Type 5 seal. This means that the suit is particle-proof or mold-proof.
As soon as you discover mold, you should cover the infested area with foil to prevent the further spread of mold spores through the room air. Make sure that you wear sufficient protective clothing such as a face mask, goggles and gloves during the masking process. In most cases, the specialist will set up an air filter device with a special HEPA filter in the mold-infested rooms before the mold is removed in order to reduce the mold spore load in the room air.
Sealing off the contaminated area
In professional remediation work, the work area is divided into so-called black and white areas with dust protection walls. Black areas represent the mold-infested area and this is where the mold removal and cleaning takes place. White areas are the parts of a room in which no mold infestation can be detected. This unsealed area can continue to be used during mold removal. The dustproof or airtight barrier prevents the mold spores from spreading further into other rooms in the home.
Professionals use milky paper instead of the widely used painter's fleece to cover the floor when removing mold. The fleece is unsuitable as a protective measure for mold removal, as cleaning the surface is very difficult and in most cases has to be disposed of.
