So it will be a super summer - for your plants too

Plants, especially potted plants, need special attention in summer when it comes to watering. The professionals at Can Juanito have a few important tips. This way, your plants will survive the summer sun without damage.

The summer season is just around the corner, nice for our time outdoors, but stressful for the plant world. To make sure your plants don't suffer too much from the higher temperatures and how you can take precautions when you're on vacation, read here.

Pay attention to the location; if flowers and plants get a lot of sun, you need to be very careful with watering. It is important to note that potted plants generally require more care and attention than plants directly in the ground. With pots, it should be borne in mind that plastic pots increase the temperature of the substrate and therefore the roots more than terracotta pots, so attention must also be paid to watering. We also recommend the addition of mycorrhiza* for strong root development. There are some plants that tolerate direct and continuous sun (lobelia, pansies, lavender, rosemary, thyme, hibiscus, yuccas, etc...), but others, on the contrary, the long hours of sunshine in summer create a lot of stress for them (ferns, marigolds, azaleas, hydrangeas, begonias, etc...)....); it is therefore important to put each plant where it belongs, or you will spend a lot of energy trying to get them through the summer. Once you have provided your plants with sufficient nutrients, you can concentrate on watering.

If you go on vacation yourself, there is always uncertainty about what will happen to your plants. If you don't have a neighbor, friend or relative to look after the garden while you're away, there are still several ways to ensure optimal watering.

Installing a drip irrigation system is the safest and most convenient option. There are drip irrigation kits and programmers on the market that allow you to program the irrigation (frequency and duration).

Relatively new is the possibility of using jellies that last up to 30 days (depending on the size of the pot you use more or less) and provide the moisture the plant needs. This solution is convenient and simple.

There are also some containers that can be placed in the substrate, for example 1 liter bottles of water, which will maintain the humidity for a few days (this option is more of a short-term solution).

*Mycorrhizae are the symbiosis between a fungus and the roots of a plant that support each other, facilitating the absorption of nutrients and root development.
