Plants: correct care during hibernation

In winter, the plant world goes into hibernation mode. But this is precisely when our beloved greenery deserves our special attention

.

Admittedly, it's not just the island that gets quieter in winter. Our garden and patio plants also take it easy and don't need as much attention as in the hot summer months. But even now there are a few things to bear in mind, says our expert from the Can Juanito Vivers Garden Center.

During the winter, our trees and plants go dormant; but even when they are dormant, that doesn't mean we don't have to take care of them.

In the fall and winter months, it is important to reduce watering and to aerate the soil well to avoid compaction so that the plants can absorb the nutrients well. So rake well once in good weather.

Our plants are grateful at this time if we provide them with good, organic fertilizer, because even when the soil is dormant, they still need food.

The use of earthworm humus or other animal manure is the most recommended option.

If you live in frost-prone areas, such as the higher altitudes of the Tramuntana, mulch the roots with mulch or coconut fiber to protect them.

When the roots are properly protected, we can prune or train our trees accordingly. After pruning, the wounds should be protected with resins or products made for this purpose. This will prevent fungal or bacterial infestation, and a product containing Nordox copper is helpful here.

If you want to plant new specimens, Asir rooting tablets are recommended so that the new tree gets good roots and is protected against soil fungi. Protect the plants from insects such as snails and slugs – and pay as much attention as possible to other, non-harmful insects.
