How to give your fruit tree a new hairstyle

January and February are a good time to prune and cut fruit trees on Mallorca.

This will get them in shape for the coming spring.

Even in Mallorca, there's not too much to do in the garden between January and March. Almost all plants are still in regenerative hibernation. However, if you have a fruit tree, it is a good idea to prune it in the coming weeks so that it sprouts vigorously and produces fruit in spring and summer. Winter pruning is also ideal for giving the crown a special shape later on.

Always prune on dry days

As a general rule, trees should only be pruned on dry days to prevent fungal spores or other pathogens from settling in the moist pruning wound.

Remove stem cuttings first

The first thing to do is to remove all so-called stem suckers, i.e. the shoots that grow directly out of the trunk. The next step is to cut off long shoots that have no room to develop further. Then you can take care of so-called "competing shoots", i.e. shoots that are in each other's way on a branch.

Correct lateral and central shoots

Of course, all shoots that sprout to the side and hinder the upward growth or shape of the crown must also be pruned. The same applies to central shoots that are too long.

Consider age and size

Depending on the size and age of the tree, you should proceed with caution when pruning. Older trees are generally forgiving of overly brash handling of shears and saws. Younger trees are more sensitive in this respect and could be damaged.

Get expert advice at the garden center

If you are not sure whether and how to give your fruit tree a new winter hairstyle, it is best to seek advice from an expert at a garden center on the island. There you will also receive information on further care with regard to watering, soil conditions, fertilizer use and protective measures against pest infestation.
