Choosing the right pot for patio and balcony plants depends largely on the type of plant you choose, as there are a variety of options depending on its size and needs. To prepare correctly, you first need to know the size. With soil or substrate, the volume is always measured, i.e. the size is given in liters, as the height is multiplied by the width times the length (cubic centimeters) - see the table above. Stones (volcanic pozzolan or clay balls) are placed in the bottom of the pot (which should always have holes!) to create good drainage, something essential for the survival of the plant.
Now place a substrate suitable for the type of plant in the pot. Leave out the planting hole in the middle. Place the plant in the hole and fill it with the remaining substrate. Press the soil down lightly so that the plant sits firmly. Water generously so that the entire soil is well saturated.
For small annual plants (their life cycle is one year or one season), such as pansies (Viola cornuta), peonies, gerberas, etc., a universal potting soil is ideal. The choice of pot depends on space conditions and taste. Both terracotta and plastic pots are suitable for this type of plant. A larger planter can also be used, as it is ideal for placing several plants together. For medium-sized, woody plants such as perennial Mediterranean herbs (rosemary, lavender, sage), we also recommend using a normal substrate.
For larger plants and even trees such as bougainvilleas, lemon trees and small fruit trees, terracotta pots are recommended, as the clay is porous and therefore ideal for exchanging moisture with the environment.
It is important that the size of the pot is adapted to the size of the potted plant. Potted plants in particular require an appropriate water supply in summer and in direct sunlight. The risk of drying out is very high due to the soil mass. You should also make sure to provide the plants with additional nutrients if necessary and prune them normally.
