How to bring your potted flowers out of hibernation

As temperatures rise, potted plants in Mallorca will be putting out their shoots again in the coming weeks. Here are a few tips to help them awaken in spring.

When winter is over, spring awakens - even for potted flowers ....

Adiós Winter, Bienvenido Frühling!, it's slowly but surely time for all gardening enthusiasts on Mallorca. Because while home plants in central and northern Europe are hibernating due to the frosty temperatures, potted and bedding plants in Mediterranean climes are already putting out their shoots again. Here are a few tips for a successful spring awakening of plants on the island.

Gently acclimatize to the sun

On Mallorca, too, the sun has gone into economy mode in recent months, meaning that plants have received much less light than usual.

When putting out potted plants, you should therefore make sure that they are not exposed to direct sunlight for the first few months. As the plants are no longer used to the sunlight, this can lead to burns on the leaves. So first put them in the shade, then after a week in partial shade and finally weeks in the sun. Provided, of course, that the plant can tolerate the full sun at all.

New year, new pot

If the plant pot has become too small for the plant, i.e. the soil is already completely rooted, then it may be time to repot. To do this, you should use a pot that is a maximum of two sizes larger. If the plants are placed in an even larger pot in spring, they will experience a very strong growth spurt: the plant will become much larger and take up more space.

Get under the shears

Most potted plants can tolerate a good pruning of their shoots after hibernation. In general, these can be shortened by up to a third of their current length.

A pick-me-up after hibernation

Most people need a coffee in the morning after getting up to wake them up. This is no different for potted plants after the winter break. As a caffeine injection, however, you should not immediately reach for the liquid fertilizer, which is often too highly concentrated and leads to overdosing. Long-lasting fertilizer pearls, which are commercially available, are better. They usually work for the whole season, but you can also add more in the summer.

Out with the louse!

Plant pests such as aphids and mealybugs like it warm and dark. It is therefore quite possible that potted and potted plants have been infested by these unwelcome pests in recent months. Biological sprays help to kill them off. Anyone in doubt should seek advice from a garden center or specialist company.

Finally

Spring in Mallorca is in the starting blocks. The perfect time to think about planting new plants in the garden or on the terrace. However, foreigners in particular often have insufficient knowledge about what kind of plants - whether potted or bedded - thrive best, which location is most suitable for them or how they should be cared for and nurtured in the Mediterranean climate. It is therefore best to seek advice from a specialist company.

We wish your plants a happy spring awakening!
