The end of winter is an ideal time to plant and transplant fruit trees. During hibernation, the trees remain in a dormant state to conserve enough energy so that they can start new shoots in spring and initiate the reproduction and fruiting period. All the energy is stored in the roots, as the supply of nutrients to the branches is less intensive.
The tree has needs
A tree as a living being has basic needs for food and care. With good management from the outset, you can create a truly species-rich ecosystem full of fruit and thus produce your own fruit.
In general, the soil should be deep (i.e. no large rocks less than 50 cm from the surface), have good drainage, a suitable pH and sufficient organic matter. In the case of Mallorca, both the soil and the water have an alkaline pH (calcareous soils with potassium carbonates), but the pH can be corrected by adding plenty of decomposed organic material in the form of humic acids, manure or compost, creating an ideal environment for the growth of fruit trees.
The right choice of plants
There are fruit tree varieties that require two specimens (male and female) to fertilize the fruit, such as cherry trees, kiwis, pistachios, etc. But self-fertile trees have also become possible thanks to advances in plant genetics and grafting. In addition, the sowing or planting of flowering plants (plants that attract pollinators, especially bees, such as rosemary, thyme, lavender, etc.) around the tree makes the important pollination much more effective and abundant. In addition, this promotes biodiversity and the protection of insects and birds and protects the ecosystem.
