Tips and tricks for an evergreen lawn under the Mediterranean sun
Mallorca, known for its bright sunshine, beautiful beaches and Mediterranean climate, does not always offer the ideal conditions for a lush lawn. But with the right care, your lawn can stay green and healthy all year round, even on this beautiful island. Our expert from Can Juanito Vivers has a few tips for you.
The lawn is not only a highlight in every garden in summer, but requires careful attention all year round. During the winter months, you might think that the lawn is resting, but it is actually these cold months that can be crucial for its health.
A new start in spring and fall:
If you are planning a new planting, whether from seed or turf, then September-autumn and spring between March and April are the best times. Extreme temperatures and drought are not ideal for the young grasses. Remember to prepare the soil accordingly so that the seed or turf can thrive.
Winter care:
The cold months are often a challenge. The foliage begins to rot, providing ideal conditions for fungal infestation. It is therefore advisable to remove wet and dry leaves regularly with a rake. In heavy frost, mowing should be avoided or at least reduced. A slightly higher lawn protects the seeds from frost. Another tip for winter care is to apply a long-term fertilizer in autumn to give the lawn a healthy color and vigour.
Watering in winter:
As more rain is to be expected in winter, watering should be reduced. Make sure that no puddles form. If watering is necessary, it is best to do this at midday. This prevents root rot and facilitates the removal of excess water.
No matter what time of year, with these tips you can be sure that your lawn in Mallorca is always in top condition.
