Most incidents can be avoided with simple rules of conduct or by retrofitting safety technology.

The ongoing coronavirus crisis in Mallorca is not only having a negative impact on the regional economy. As the crisis progresses, crime on the island is also on the rise. In recent weeks, the police have registered an increased number of break-ins in private homes.  News about series of burglaries lasting for days, such as the one in the Calvià and Palma area at the beginning of August, are also not uncommon. But there is also good news for house and apartment owners on the island: everyone can protect themselves from burglaries! Even simple rules of conduct or retrofitting security technology can deter uninvited guests. Many burglary attempts fail due to professional burglary protection such as mechanical door and window locks and alarm systems. So it's high time to take a close look at the weak points in your home and review your own behavior.

Make life difficult for burglars

Many residents make it easy for burglars: the front door is only closed when you leave the house, windows are left ajar. Even simple measures can provide more burglary protection and security:

  • Always lock the front door
  • Close all windows, even during short absences
  • Signal your presence (control lighting via a timer, have the letterbox emptied when on vacation, always close the garage door, open roller shutters during the day, close at night)
  • Always respond to doorbells, but do not open them without hesitation
  • .

In addition, all easily accessible access points to the apartment or house - especially windows, balcony and patio doors - should be checked for possible weak points, as these are the most popular targets for burglars. Windows, for example, can be pried open with a screwdriver without much effort. Garbage cans, garden furniture or trellises on the property can be used by burglars as a climbing opportunity and should therefore be locked away or removed. Although burglaries often occur during the day, a rule of thumb is: the darker, the better for the burglar.

    Light is a deterrent

Installing lighting systems and light sources in dark corners around the house increases the risk of detection and is therefore a simple but effective method of deterring burglars. It makes sense to equip vulnerable areas, such as the entrance or patio, with motion detectors so that the light goes on as soon as someone approaches, even if unwanted. When installing motion detectors, make sure that they are mounted at a height of at least three and a half meters so that thieves cannot vandalize them.

    Stop thieves in their tracks

As a general rule, all measures that increase the time spent by burglars protect against unwelcome visitors. Experience from loss prevention shows that burglars generally abandon their plan and try another property if they cannot get into a house within two to four minutes. Burglar-resistant doors and windows offer excellent security. Existing doors can be retrofitted with additional security locks, for example. Attention should be paid to effective and stable products as well as professional installation.
If mechanical protection is not enough, burglary protection can be supplemented with electronic components. A distinction is made between burglar alarm systems and hazard warning systems.
Smarthome technology offers additional possibilities. It allows you to monitor and control home technology and burglar alarms via your smartphone and tablet.
Despite all security precautions, it is not possible to protect a house or apartment one hundred percent against burglars. For this reason, it is important to take out household contents insurance to protect yourself financially against the consequences of burglary, robbery and vandalism.
